Furniture Design
Growing up with an engineer draftsman dad who made mechanical drawings of a desk and then turned out that very same desk in the wood shop is definitely the main inspiration here. I love to design furniture that satisfies a human need in a specific space and for a specific purpose. I enjoy trying my hand at making furniture too, but have also really grown to appreciate collaborating with Moroccan craftsmen to realize projects for our home and art residency studios.
No major feat … but one that still plays a crucial part in the life of our kitchen. It was my first time joining wood with dowels.
I had seen these cool hanging chairs around occasionally and the concept seemed fairly simple. It made me want to make one. Our balcony in Tetouan is pretty narrow, so the idea of crowding it with chairs had been keeping us from doing anything to create a seating area. An awning shop provided the waterproof canvas, stitched and grommeted. I built the beam and assembled the chairs while my family was traveling so I could surprise them upon return.
